ABOUT CATHERINE CHRISTIE

2006 SA Business Woman of the Year nomination in Culture and Arts. Another nomination in 2012. Third nomination in year 2014 for *Outstanding Achievement in Culture and Arts-Department of Government, on behalf of the Mdoboko Awards. For 20 years as South Africa’s leading Abstract Artist with much global recognition, the artist has now extended her talent into the Australian market again after exhibiting here 15 years ago in a co-owned gallery with her sister, called Code Red. Recently appointed artiste in residence for Atlas Pearls she continues to paint her world renowned Oyster paintings and Ocean Scapes, exhibiting them in the Atlas showroom in Bayview Terrace, Claremont, WA. With two South African Business Woman of the Year nominations (2006 & 2012) under the belt, there is still clearly so much more to Create and Explore. Catherine also received an outstanding achievement award by SA Government Departure of Culture and Arts 2014.

*This remained a nomination only because Artist was unable to attend the televised event, for various reasons, despite the generous offer of complimentary flights and accomodation to Gauteng-Johannesburg.

“My passion is to paint commissions for homes or corporate interiors that bring life into that space…That hold an inspiring and beautiful congruent energy within the environment that they are placed. My sincere love of colour and form is clear to enjoy in all of my endeavours – coupled with the fact that I take the back drop in which the work will rest, into serious consideration, when planning, painting or designing, so then end result tells a story.” ~ CC

Catherine’s fascination with the organic feminine Oyster is well known amongst her Collectors. The ever evolving Oyster series past 20 years and for which the artist is well renowned,continues..The relevance of such inspiration here for the Artist as she describes it is,”The Oyster offers up a Pearl treasure when it’s tested with Grit or Interference. This is Magic. This is transformation at its best. This is the quintessential premise of true Beauty and Alchemy in all its symbolic form and Splendour.”

Catherine has been painting Oyster inspired theme paintings for two decades and never tires of trying to capture the essence of such poignant truth found in nature. The artists love of the Ocean is visceral in her art and her many Sea-scapes bear testament to this. If one is a collector of Catherine’s works,or a lover of the Ocean, one certainly has to own one of her Oyster or Ocean Series paintings. For any contemporary art collector who enjoys a deep affinity with The Sea,they certainly should aspire to add such a painting to their Collection. The textures and layers are complicated, skilled and reminiscent to the touch of sand, shells and sea salt…while the colour palettes conjure up all that is seductive and alluring of Ocean in its many moods and facets. Beautiful and well executed Emotive Art Works that speak to the Soul and or The Universal Heart. Each work is finished and signed with a stainless steel name plate bottom right corner of the canvas.
